Air pollution, CO2 and traffic in Denmark and EU

Seminar May 11, 2009

A comprehensive Dutch study published in world's leading medical journal The Lancet underlines
that the mortality rate is almost 50 % increased among people living closer than 50 meters to a road
with heavy traffic (more than 10.000 daily motorised vehicles). According to the National Institute
of Public Health in Denmark this corresponds to 500 premature deaths in Copenhagen or 5.000
years of lost lifetime. Furthermore, in Copenhagen air pollution from traffic is estimated to cause
thousands of bronchitis attacks, ten thousands of asthma attacks, and hundred thousands of days
with reduced productivity at work due to illness. Finally, motorised road traffic is one of the major
sources to CO2-pollution and thereby global warming.

The seminar focuses upon Danish and European solutions to pollution from traffic and has been
partly financed by Board for the Advancement of Debate and Enlightenment Regarding Europe.
