This article presents the problems of using GDP to describe growth, and the possible alternatives and supplements – and it summarizes the views of prominent speakers at the 20-years anniversary conference of The Ecological Council November, 2011.

Leaders around the world are presenting ‘Green Growth’ as a solution to the economic and ecological crisis. Nevertheless all countries are in the end measured by their growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), although it includes all production and consumption as positive – even if it degrades health and environment.
